FAQ

Carry your Transcend with you on your flight. As a medical device, it will not count as one of your carry-on items. Never check a sleep apnea therapy device with your baggage as it can be damaged through normal luggage handling procedures. Your doctor can provide you with a letter stating your diagnosis and the need to carry your device with you, if necessary: Be sure to call the airline in advance to clarify procedures and in-flight policies.

Yes! Transcend’s universal AC power supply makes it easy to use Transcend outside the United States. The universal power supply automatically converts the power current, so all you need to bring on your trip is a plug adaptor to fit the two prong configuration of your Transcend power supply. Plug adaptors can be found at major department and hardware stores.

Transcend and its accessories and parts are available at reputable medical equipment dealers.

Transcend is competitively priced with other CPAP devices on the market.

Yes, the Transcend battery can be recharged with the AC power supply or mobile power adaptor while delivering therapy.

The Transcend P4 battery system provides sufficient power to operate the device for 7-9 hours at a pressure setting of 14 cmH2O. The Transcend P8 battery system provides power for 14-16 hours of use at the same setting. Both the P4 and P8 batteries are designed to accommodate at least 300 discharge/recharge cycles with standard use.

Transcend uses patented heat moisture exchange (HME) technology to provide humidification during therapy. HME technology has been used in hospital ventilators for over 50 years, but Transcend is the first to utilize this innovative technology in CPAP therapy.

The hygienic heat moisture exchanger (HME) is disposable and has no electric heating elements. HME technology works naturally with your breath to give you the humidification you need. During therapy, the small and hygienic HME captures heat and moisture from your exhaled breath, then it gives it back to you when you inhale to provide warm, moist air. This eliminates the need for a traditional heated humidifier and all the problems that come with it.

Different people require different levels of humidification. The HME should be replaced once you feel you are no longer receiving adequate humidification. Generally, this will be about once a week. Your Transcend waterless humidification system comes with four HMEs. Replacements can be ordered from your dealer.

Yes, the HME is now reimbursable through insurance.

No. Transcend has been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and found safe for everyday use. In addition, Transcend uses advance blower technology that all but eliminates friction and heat generation. You will feel no heat or vibration from Transcend.

Transcend operates in the full pressure range of 4-20 cmH20.

Yes. Transcend provides ramp within the range of 5-45 minutes in five (5) minute increments. The ramp feature is engaged by pushing the ramp button located above the on/off button on the back of the Transcend CPAP. The ramp can be accelerated by pressing and holding the ramp button until the full ramp pressure is achieved.

Yes. Transcend has internal memory that captures compliance data for 12 months. A full compliance report, including AHI, leak detection, hours of use, and other data can be viewed by using the Transcend compliance reporting software.

Compliance data is retrieved from Transcend by connecting the USB cable (provided) to a computer in which the Transcend compliance software has been installed, or to the optional Transcend LCD Programmable Base Station.

Transcend is warranted for workmanship for a period of 2 years. In the event the Transcend CPAP must be returned for warranty replacement, contact Transcend customer service at 651-621-1800 to obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number. Once you have an RMA authorization, you can return the Transcend CPAP directly to Somnetics at the address provided in the Transcend User Manual.

No. Transcend is built to the same rigorous standards as all other CPAPs. The testing requirements are established by the International Standards Organization (ISO) and passing the tests is required to obtain approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or regulatory agencies outside the U.S.

Transcend was designed to fit the active lifestyle of its users, and this is reflected in its flexible use options. Transcend is small and light enough to be placed right on the bed while you sleep, you can put it on the bedside stand, it can be placed in the drawer of the bedside stand, you can set it on the floor next to the bed, or you can set it next to your sleeping bag while you’re out under the stars. To help enable the bedside stand option, Transcend offers a Base Station accessory.

Transcend can be used with all CPAP masks, including nasal cushion, nares pillow, and full face. Note, however, that unless the Transcend Waterless Humidification™ option is used, humidification will not be available.

If the Transcend Waterless Humidification option is used, mask compatibility is important. See the question: Is Transcend Waterless Humidification technology compatible with all CPAP masks? for a discussion on mask compatibility.

To give you the freedom to use the mask of your choice, Transcend does not come with a CPAP mask. This is common practice with all CPAP offerings.

Yes. There are two battery options available. The P4 Overnight™ Battery System is about the size of a deck of cards and weighs about half a pound. The P4 battery is designed to provide one night’s CPAP operation (7-9 hours operation at 14 cmH2O).
The P8 Multi-Night™ Battery System covers the same footprint as the P4 battery, but is approximately twice the thickness. The P8 battery weighs just over one pound and is designed to provide two night’s CPAP operation (14-16 hours operation at 14 cmH2O).
Both the P4 and P8 batteries are lithium ion. From a dead charge, it takes approximately 5 hours to fully charge the P4 battery and 8 hours to charge the P8 battery using AC line power or DC power (using an optional Transcend Mobile Power Adaptor). Either battery should last a minimum of 300 charging cycles.
P4 and P8 batteries can also be charged using the Transcend Solar Battery Charger. Note, however, the charge time using the Transcend Solar Battery Charger will be longer and will depend on the availability of sunlight. From a dead charge, the Transcend Solar Battery Charger will charge the P4 battery in approximately 6 hours if the Charger is placed in direct sunlight, while 12 hours will be needed to charge the P8 battery.

Yes. The warranty period on batteries is 9 months, which would equate to approximately 300 charge cycles.

Yes. The P4 and P8 batteries can be used in line with AC power (home wall power) or DC power (such as in a car, boat or RV). By doing so, the P4 or P8 battery will provide an uninterrupted power supply, just like a laptop computer battery. In the event of a storm or power outage, using the Transcend battery in line will guarantee power for the therapy you need for a good night’s sleep.

AHI, or the apnea/hypopnea index, is a measure of severity of sleep disordered breathing that combines apneas (stopping breathing) with hypopneas (lowered breathing level). An AHI of less than 5 is considered normal; 5-15 is considered mild sleep apnea; 15-30 is considered moderate; and >30 is considered severe.

Transcend Waterless Humidification employs technology called heat-moisture exchange, or HME to provide warm, moist air during CPAP therapy. Heat-moisture exchange technology has been used in hospital and home care ventilation for more than 50 years and works by capturing the heat and moisture from the patient during exhalation and returning it on inhalation.

The HME insert will last approximately seven (7) nights of use. Some patients requiring more humidification may need to replace the insert more frequently.

Yes. Clinical research has shown that HME insert media does not support the growth of disease-causing organisms.

Special pressure monitoring technology had to be developed to allow the use of HME technology in CPAP applications. Only Transcend has this technology.
You should note that because this pressure monitoring technology changes the air flow pattern in the mask during exhalation, there is a noticeable auditory change from inhalation to exhalation. This change is generally not problematic, but for some patients it may sound louder.

No. At this time the Transcend Waterless Humidification technology is only compatible with ResMed Ultra Mirage™ 2, Activa™ and Active™ LT and Respironics ComfortGel and ComfortGel Blue mask seals (cushions). Compatibility with other mask seals is in development.
Note that a special headgear and mask shell are required for using the Transcend Waterless Humidification. The mask seal attaches to the mask shell using specially designed mask seal adaptors.

In this case, the Universal Hose Adaptor is not attached correctly to the Transcend CPAP, the mask is leaking significantly, or the mask is not on the patient. Transcend is designed to shut down if there is no resistance to air flow. If the problem persists after checking the Universal Hose Adaptor and securely placing the mask on the patient, check the Fault descriptions in the Transcend User Guide or contact your homecare provider for assistance.

Pressure and ramp can be set by a Clinician or DME on the Transcend CPAP by using either the compliance software supplied with the Transcend Sleep Apnea Therapy System or the optional LCD Programmable Base Station. Either must be operated in Clinician mode to set pressure on Transcend.

Blinking LED lights can indicate many things. Refer to the Transcend User Manual for full explanation.

If you are a healthcare provider or durable medical equipment (DME) supplier you can order Transcend by calling 651-621-1800.
If you are a sleep apnea patient, you can purchase Transcend from your local DME supplier or on the internet through a number of online CPAP suppliers. Please visit www.mytranscend.com to locate a supplier near you.

No. Transcend is approved by the FDA as a single patient use medical device. That means it cannot be used on more than one patient. As such, no units are available for test before purchase.

Generally yes, but because reimbursements vary from company to company you should contact your insurance company to be sure. It is recommended that you contact your local DME or healthcare provider for advice in the event you want to use your insurance to help pay for Transcend.

Drying mode serves as a method to dry out excess moisture remaining from device usage. As such, it is preferable to keep the hose and interface attached, but not required.

The Transcend CPAP is designed for efficient therapy delivery regardless of orientation, thus you may seat the device in whichever direction allows for the most comfortable therapy.
