Humidification FAQ

Humidification

Transcend uses patented heat moisture exchange (HME) technology to provide humidification during therapy. HME technology has been used in hospital ventilators for over 50 years, but Transcend is the first to utilize this innovative technology in CPAP therapy.

The hygienic heat moisture exchanger (HME) is disposable and has no electric heating elements. HME technology works naturally with your breath to give you the humidification you need. During therapy, the small and hygienic HME captures heat and moisture from your exhaled breath, then it gives it back to you when you inhale to provide warm, moist air. This eliminates the need for a traditional heated humidifier and all the problems that come with it.

Different people require different levels of humidification. The HME should be replaced once you feel you are no longer receiving adequate humidification. Generally, this will be about once a week. Your Transcend waterless humidification system comes with four HMEs. Replacements can be ordered from your dealer.

Yes, the HME is now reimbursable through insurance.

Transcend Waterless Humidification employs technology called heat-moisture exchange, or HME to provide warm, moist air during CPAP therapy. Heat-moisture exchange technology has been used in hospital and home care ventilation for more than 50 years and works by capturing the heat and moisture from the patient during exhalation and returning it on inhalation.

The HME insert will last approximately seven (7) nights of use. Some patients requiring more humidification may need to replace the insert more frequently.

Yes. Clinical research has shown that HME insert media does not support the growth of disease-causing organisms.

Special pressure monitoring technology had to be developed to allow the use of HME technology in CPAP applications. Only Transcend has this technology.
You should note that because this pressure monitoring technology changes the air flow pattern in the mask during exhalation, there is a noticeable auditory change from inhalation to exhalation. This change is generally not problematic, but for some patients it may sound louder.

No. At this time the Transcend Waterless Humidification technology is only compatible with ResMed Ultra Mirage™ 2, Activa™ and Active™ LT and Respironics ComfortGel and ComfortGel Blue mask seals (cushions). Compatibility with other mask seals is in development.
Note that a special headgear and mask shell are required for using the Transcend Waterless Humidification. The mask seal attaches to the mask shell using specially designed mask seal adaptors.
